"Net zero carbon emission" has become a global trend, and various industries are gearing up to implement related strategies, driving a surge in demand for talents in related fields. In order to respond to the trend of sustainability and fulfill the social responsibility of the university, the CCRS of National Sun Yat-sen University, in collaboration with the Alumni Service Center, launched a special course titled "Introduction to Net-Zero Carbon Emission Planning and Management". This course is offered free of charge to faculty, staff, students and alumni. Alumni who participated expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and appreciated that the courses were very helpful.
 

"The EU CBAM (EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) has officially come into effect, and people are starting to realize that 'this is for real!'", said Professor Hung-Jeng Tsai, Director of the CCRS. As the era of “carbon pricing” arrives, the Taiwanese government established the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX) in 2023, and partnered with National Sun Yat-sen University to launch the Center for Carbon Research and Solution (CCRS) to support  enterprises in developing related strategic plans. To ensure that the university stays in step with evolving carbon-related policies, the CCRS and Alumni Service Center have jointly designed a special course aligned with the Ministry of Economic Affairs' iPAS Net-Zero Carbon Planning Manager knowledge. This course enables NSYSU faculty, students and alumni to gain a comprehensive understanding of the concept of "net-zero carbon emissions" and the internationally recognized strategies and methods for implementing carbon reduction practices.

This special course began with Professor Hung-Jeng Tsai introducing the development context and international trends of carbon pricing, along with key concepts and progress of carbon credit management. Following that, Kenneth Ko, Executive Vice President of K&R Technology Taiwan Ltd., delivered an in-depth explanation of international climate and sustainability initiatives, organizational greenhouse gas inventories, carbon footprint calculation of products, and the technology and development trends of carbon neutrality. The course led students to have a detailed understanding of both domestic and international standards for carbon inventory and carbon footprint assessments, and to analyze and calculate carbon emission sources based on real-life scenarios. This course also featured a guest lecture by Ming-Chih Chuang, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, to share the government's efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation, and national energy policies and security assessments. Participating students shared their feedback: "The course was very rewarding. I gained a better understanding of carbon emissions and the course helped me grasp how to apply the knowledge in practice."

In promoting the sustainable development of school affairs, National Sun Yat-sen University has won numerous awards such as the "National Sustainability Development Award". The university aims to help drive sustainable transformation across various local sectors. Han-Yu Wu, the team leader of the Alumni Service Center said: "Compared with large enterprises that already have dedicated sustainable departments and specialized personnels, small local enterprises and youth-led startups often lack the resources to prepare for sustainability and carbon credit issues. These are the target groups that NSYSU hopes to empower." In the future, the university will continue to plan a series of talent training programs, aiming to bring together on-campus students and local youths who are interested in sustainability development work, to receive deeper counseling and trainings to support diverse sectors of society in progressing toward net-zero goals, while echoing the development strategy of just transition in sustainable transformation goals.
