The Center for Essential Education at Si Wan College of National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), in collaboration with the Institute of Environment and Resources, launched the "Green Collar Youth Training Program." On October 5th, 2024, the program invited Qi Huan Tan, Senior Manager of the Center for Carbon Research and Solution (CCRS) of NSYSU, to deliver a lecture aimed at equipping students with knowledge of international trends, Taiwan policy directions, and essential skills for career development. Through Qi Huan Tan's presentation, participating students gained a deeper understanding of the challenges of global warming and climate change, they also developed a clearer picture of Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero emission policy trends, practical carbon management skills, and the profession demands in this field.

The "Green Collar Youth Training Program" begins with the trends of global warming and climate change, guiding participants to recognize the fact that Taiwan cannot stay outside of this global situation. Through the concept of the "Remaining Carbon Budget" (RCB), Qi Huan Tan clearly explains the urgency for Taiwan to achieve the 2050 net-zero emissions target. Net-zero emissions refer to the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, while simultaneously offsetting any remaining emissions by absorbing them through natural carbon sinks such as oceans and forests.

Furthermore, Manager Qi Huan Tan shared four key categories of green-collar professionals in corporate sectors: Chief Sustainability Officer, Sustainability Manager, ESG Strategist, Carbon Reduction Engineer and Carbon Auditor. Each role requires knowledge and training in carbon inventory and carbon disclosure. Manager Tan also presented job vacancy statistics from 104 Job Bank and workforce analysis from the National Development Council’s Department of Economic Development, to illustrate the current shortage of green-collar professionals and the vast potential for future career development in the related field. She emphasized that this is a trend that should not be overlooked.
 

The course participants came from diverse backgrounds, including business management, applied mathematics, information technology, and optoelectronics engineering, even professionals from the semiconductor manufacturing and glass technology industries joined this training program. Yi-Ting Lien, a first-year student in the International Business MBA (IBMBA) program, expressed that the instructor had prepared an abundance of valuable information and introduced many core concepts within just three hours, making the course highly rewarding.

The General Education Center of Si Wan College at NSYSU has long been organizing micro-credit workshops across multiple fields, with the core value of “Innovative Conception to Cross-College/Cross-Disciplinary Learning”. These workshops invite NSYSU lecturers, general education teaching teams, and professionals from industries to engage in discussions from various perspectives, enriching students’ learning experiences and helping them explore the fields and directions best suit their individual interests and strengths.
