Understanding Nature Carbon Sinks, NSYSU Offers New Courses
To promote the knowledge of carbon credit among the public, and further integrate it with business practices, the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX), the Center for Carbon Research and Solution (CCRS) at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), and the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) jointly launched a series of courses on “How to Acquire Carbon Credits” in September. The first session was held at the TCX headquarter in Kaohsiung, attracting participation from over half of the enterprises in southern Taiwan, mainly from the photovoltaic, steel, and metal manufacturing industries. The program aims to facilitate corporate net-zero goals and voluntary carbon reductions.
The first session covered topics on “Ocean and Natural Carbon Sinks Methods” and “Carbon Credit Trading and Its Market Mechanisms”, featuring experts including Wan-Yu Liu, a Lifetime Distinguished Professor of Department of Forestry at National Chung Hsing University, and You-Ren Wang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Environmental Engineering at NSYSU. They assisted the participating enterprises answer various carbon credit questions, shared methodologies for natural carbon sinks, and deepened understanding of carbon credit trading and market mechanisms to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero goals.
During the opening speech, Hung-Jeng Tsai, Director of the CCRS of NSYSU, mentioned that carbon credits remain a field not yet deeply understood by many. He expressed hope that through the carbon consultation and educational outreach services at the TCX headquarter in Kaohsiung, the local enterprises will keep pace with the efforts for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
You-Ren Wang provided an in-depth explanation that a carbon credit “is the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide”. He noted that when customers require companies to achieve carbon neutrality but the companies’ speed in emission reductions is not fast enough, they need to purchase carbon credits to meet the demands of the supply chain for carbon neutrality. The goal is to reduce the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The TCX will also play an important role in facilitating carbon trading between enterprises.
Wan-Yu Liu mentioned that “if companies do not achieve net-zero, their orders may drop to zero”. International corporations have already begun requiring their supply chain partners to present carbon neutrality and net-zero strategies. Therefore, in addition to industrial carbon reduction transformation, obtaining natural carbon credits is a necessary approach. Carbon pricing is also a measure to enforce fairness and justice worldwide, while enabling Taiwan society to build a net-zero economic structure.
More carbon credit courses will be launched successively. Please stay tuned by visiting the TCX official website from time to time. Upcoming courses include “Practical Sharing on Obtaining Carbon Credits” on September 21st and an international certification course for internal verifiers is scheduled for December.
