The Center for Carbon Research and Solution at National Sun Yat-sen University collaborated with Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange, Taiwan Stock Exchange and BSI (British Standards Institution), successfully organized the first ever “Organization Level for the Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHS) Emissions and Removals ISO14064-1” course in Southern Taiwan.

The Center for Carbon Research and Solution (CCRS) at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), in collaboration with the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX), the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), and the British Standards Institution (BSI), successfully held Southern Taiwan’s first “Carbon Credit Talent Training Program - International Certification Series” this week. Follow up training and outreach courses will launch starting in March this year as part of an active effort to cultivate green-collar professionals.

As the world enters an era of climate boiling, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 has become a shared global objective. The net-zero transition has also become a critical economic issue that directly impacts the international competitiveness of industries. The first priority for corporations is to conduct a comprehensive carbon inventory to understand their overall greenhouse gas emissions, in order to plan for effective carbon reduction strategies. This collaborative program between CCRS and BSI offers a comprehensive series of courses that cover the full pathway from greenhouse gas inventory and emissions reduction to carbon neutrality. The program also integrates courses from the Ministry of Environment, which emphasize  environmental regulations and policy analysis, providing participants with the most practical and compliant carbon management training.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) was founded in 1901 as the first national standards body worldwide, and it is also a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The ISO 14064 series of standards published by ISO, has become the internationally recognized guideline for greenhouse gas inventory and verification, providing standardized methods and principles that enable users to measure, report, and verify greenhouse gas emissions under the consistent foundation.

The CCRS pointed out that the first “Organizational Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Verifier Training ISO 14064-1” course in Southern Taiwan was held from the 8 to 11th of this month at the TCX headquarters in Kaohsiung. The course was led by BSI’s experienced ISO 14064-1 Product Manager, Chuan Liu, who started the session with an overview of the severe impacts of human-driven climate change. He explained how scientific evidence and international agreements have shaped the global pathway toward net-zero emissions by 2050 over the past 20 years, showing the participants the importance and purpose of conducting greenhouse gas inventories. Over the three-day course, participants were guided through the key principles and methodologies of the ISO standard, real-world case studies, group discussions, and interactive exercises, to grasp the core concepts and build a solid understanding in carbon inventory.
 

Meng-Yun Kuo, the team leader of Climate Change Administration of the Ministry of Environment, explained and analyzed the "Regulations for Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Registration and Verification Management" at the Taipei office of TCX using video conference with the TCX headquarter at Kaohsiung, providing the participants with a solid understanding of the regulations and inventory practices in Taiwan.

Furthermore, the course featured a special session with Meng-Yun Kuo, Team Leader of the Climate Change Administration under the Ministry of Environment, who joined the course via video conference from the TCX Taipei Office to the Kaohsiung headquarter. She provided an in-depth explanation of the “Regulations for Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Registration and Verification Management”, giving participants a clearer understanding of the regulations and inventory procedures in Taiwan. The session also demonstrated the functions of the “GHG Emissions Information Platform for Enterprises”, including practical calculation tools and resource guides, offering valuable support for companies required to conduct greenhouse gas inventories.

The CCRS of NSYSU emphasized that starting in 2024, Taiwan has officially entered the era of “putting a price on carbon”. The CCRS will continue to collaborate with the TCX, launching a series of educational and outreach programs this March, aiming to advance the net-zero development strategies in Taiwan, promote widespread knowledge of carbon management, actively cultivate green-collar talent, and enhance Taiwan’s sustainability and global competitiveness.
